Spec the right food-grade flexible film: regulations, material structures, thickness and barrier requirements for snacks, frozen and fresh food.
Understand Food Contact Regulations First
Before comparing films, confirm compliance. In the US, food-contact materials fall under FDA rules; in the EU it is Framework Regulation 1935/2004 and Plastics Regulation 10/2011; in China it is the GB 4806 series. A film that is not certified for food contact cannot legally touch food, regardless of price. Always ask suppliers for the relevant compliance statement.
Pick the Right Material Structure
Single-layer PE is common for simple frozen or fresh applications, but most food films are multi-layer laminates that combine strength, sealability and barrier. PET/PE and BOPP/CPP are workhorses for dry snacks; PA (nylon) layers add puncture resistance for vacuum and sharp-edged products. Match the structure to what you are protecting, not to a catalogue.
Match Thickness to the Product
Thickness (typically 20 to 100 microns) drives cost and performance. Light snacks need less; frozen and vacuum applications need more to survive handling and temperature swings. Over-specifying wastes material; under-specifying causes leakers and returns. A short conversation with your supplier about fill weight and shelf life usually settles the right gauge.
Do Not Ignore Printing and Barrier
If the pack is also your shelf presence, rotogravure or digital printing and a matte or gloss finish matter. For oxygen- or moisture-sensitive food, add EVOH or aluminium-foil layers for barrier. State your required shelf life up front so the structure is engineered for it.
