What ESD Actually Does to Electronics
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can silently damage or destroy sensitive components like PCBs, ICs and semiconductors — often with no visible signs. For any facility handling modern electronics, uncontrolled static is a direct yield and reliability risk.
How a Shielding Bag Works
An ESD shielding bag has a metalized layer that forms a Faraday cage, diverting static around the contents. A moisture-barrier variant adds a desiccant-friendly laminate to also block humidity. Together they protect parts in storage and transit, not just on the bench.
Shielding vs Anti-Static vs Dissipative
Anti-static bags only prevent charge build-up on the bag surface; dissipative bags slowly bleed charge; shielding bags actively block external fields. For unprotected sensitive components, only shielding (often with moisture barrier) gives real transit protection.
When You Need One
Use shielding bags whenever you move or store bare PCBs, semiconductor dies, or assembled boards outside an ESD-controlled area — inbound from suppliers, between lines, and outbound to customers. Pair with ESD-safe labels and tapes for a complete chain.
